Postnatal Care

  • Postnatal care, also known as postpartum care, refers to the medical and emotional care provided to a woman and her newborn in the period following childbirth. This period is typically the first six weeks after giving birth, but it can extend beyond that as well. The main goals of postnatal care are to ensure the well-being of the mother and the newborn, monitor and address any potential complications, and provide support for the physical and emotional adjustments that occur during this time.

Key Components of Our Postnatal Care

  1. Physical Examination: Regular check-ups for the mother to assess her physical recovery, including monitoring vital signs, checking the healing of any incisions (such as from a cesarean section), and evaluating the uterus size.
  2. Newborn Care: Assessing the health and well-being of the newborn, including monitoring weight gain, checking for jaundice, and addressing any feeding issues. Guidance on newborn care, breastfeeding, and infant hygiene is often provided.
  3. Breastfeeding Support: Assistance and guidance on breastfeeding techniques, addressing any concerns or challenges that may arise, and ensuring that the baby is latching and feeding effectively.
  4. Emotional Support: Postnatal care includes addressing the emotional well-being of the mother. This may involve discussing feelings, addressing concerns, and providing information about postpartum mood disorders.
  5. Contraception Counseling: Discussing family planning options and providing information about contraception methods to help the mother make informed decisions about future pregnancies.
  6. Monitoring and Managing Complications: Identifying and addressing any postpartum complications such as infections, postpartum hemorrhage, or other health issues that may arise.
  7. Postpartum Exercises: Recommending appropriate postpartum exercises to help with physical recovery and regain strength.
  8. Follow-Up Appointments: Scheduling follow-up appointments to ensure that both the mother and the baby are progressing well, and addressing any concerns or questions the family may have.
